This book was included in the RISD biennial, On the Edge of Normal.
On View is an exploration of the relationships between color, women, art history, and the RISD Museum.
For this work, I surveyed the works on view in the RISD museum in February 2019. Of the 3,154 objects on view, 46 were paintings that included women with clothes. I took photos of each and consulted the listings online to capture the colors used for the women’s clothing in each painting.
The result is a book in which I translate the paintings into distilled spreads of colour. The cover is a table of contents that shows the outlines of the clothes, which are portrayed with blocks of colour on the subsequent pages. The text is taken directly from the RISD Museum object labels.
